Chapter 9

Unicorns and Ballads

It isn’t until we’re pulling up Kirk’s driveway that I start to think that maybe bringing Percy with me to practice wasn’t a great idea. My fear is further confirmed when I see Kirk’s livid face as soon as we walk into the garage. I mean, we’re not a couple anymore and he’s been with tons of other girls since the breakup, but a girl moving on is a whole different rodeo than when a guy does it. I forgot how territorial Kirk is and his shitty double standards. It’s unfair and totally uncalled for, but it doesn’t take a genius to guess that Kirk is jealous. Hell, his face is starting to turn the same shade of red as his hair.

“Lucy, you have some explaining to do,” Tracy says, imitating Ricky Ricardo’s voice from that old show I Love Lucy. It’s one of our favorites we would watch during sleepovers. I wish I can bury my head in the sand and not look up. I don’t know what’s going on with Percy, and I don’t need Kirk complicating things even further.

Taking the crook of my arm, she leads me away from the boys’ stare down and over to the old loveseat pushed against the back wall. “Trace, I can’t even begin to explain,” I say honestly.

“Let’s start with the cliff notes version and later, you can fill in the blanks,” she suggests.

“Okay, well he showed up at my house Sunday night because he was paired with me for that big project in Debate and my mom went all postal on me and practically pushed me out the apartment for a sleepover so we could finish the project at his place.”

“What? No way,” she screeches and the guys look our way before returning to puffing up their chests. “She really did that? What did you guys do all night? Is his place nice? Did you hook up? Is he a good kisser? Are you a couple now?”

“Girl, breathe,” I interrupt her bombarding me with questions. “Yes, she really did that despite my protest. I did my half of the project while he played on his phone, his place is okay,” I vaguely lie and push on before she asks me to elaborate. “Yes, we kinda sorta hooked up and yes, he’s a good kisser.”

“What about the last thing? Were you able to tame the unicorn?”

“The what?” I ask laughing.

“You know? Mystical creature, hard to find, and impossible to catch.”

“I know what a unicorn is. I just want to know what it has to do with Percy.”

“As, Percy is the ultimate unicorn. He’s tall, dark, and hot as fuck. He has more unknowns than the Bermuda Triangle and is completely unattainable. He’s a quest that can’t be conquered because, like a unicorn, no one knows much about him or where to find him. Not even his crew and he hangs out with them everyday.”

“Your logic is flawed, my friend, but it doesn’t matter. I have no idea what’s going on with us.
